Anxiety typically is not pathological (disease oriented), and is highly treatable, unless it becomes chronic. However, even chronic anxiety is highly treatable, but medications may be introduced in conjunction with therapy; medication is totally up to the client, not the therapist. Everyone and anyone can have anxiety. In simple terms, anxiety is irrational fear that results from mismanagement of problematic unconscious, subconscious, or conscious thoughts. So, basically, your scary thoughts are scaring you, which triggers your fight/flight/freeze response to engage with no rational reason to; which produces an anxious feeling. You'll work with your therapist to identify any interpersonal issues you may have, such as unresolved grief, conflicts with family or friends, changes in work or social roles, and problems relating to self and others. You'll then learn healthy ways to express emotions, ways to improve your communication and learn how to manage the harmful thoughts that lead to anxiety. This a simple concept, but not easy to do.

There are many types of therapies available for depression. Three of the more common methods used in depression treatment include cognitive behavioral therapy, interpersonal therapy, and psychodynamic therapy. Often, a blended approach is used.

Uncontrollable sadness, anger, or hopelessness may be signs of a mental health issue that can improve with treatment. If you're eating or sleeping more or less than usual, withdrawing from family and friends, or just feeling “off,” then therapy most likely can be of benefit to you.


Grief may be experienced as a mental, physical, social or emotional reaction. Mental reactions can include anger, guilt, anxiety, sadness, and despair. Bereavement is the period after a loss during which grief is experienced and mourning occurs.

There is no set timetable for grief. You may start to feel better in 6 to 8 weeks, but the whole process can last anywhere from 6 months to 4 years. You may start to feel better in small ways. It will start to get a little easier to get up in the morning, or maybe you'll have more energy.

Grief treatment includes helping clients know the steps through grief, and gain tools to help with the process, and to advise clients of the normalcy of what they are feeling as many people feel "they are going crazy" due to the conflicting feelings and emotions spiraling through their body.


There are three main types of trauma are acute, chronic, or complex.

  • Acute trauma results from a single incident.

  • Chronic trauma is repeated and prolonged such as domestic violence or abuse.

  • Complex trauma is exposure to varied and multiple traumatic events, often of an invasive, interpersonal nature. Complex trauma is prevalent in childhood experiences that involve on going physical, sexual, emotional abuse and neglect. Or being a witness to ongoing abusive behavior towards others.

Severe emotional trauma causes lasting changes in the ventromedial prefrontal cortex region of the brain that is responsible for regulating emotional responses triggered by the amygdala which is your brains "security system" and activates the Fight, Flight and Freeze response. Specifically, this region regulates negative emotions such as fear that occur when confronted with specific stimuli.

Therapy can last anywhere from several weeks to several months or even years. It all depends on what you want, need and have experienced.

Children and Adolescents Behavioral/Emotional Issues

Children have many of the same mental health issues as adults and may also need counseling. ... Therapy for kids can aid children who have such problems as anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and conduct disorder.

Many of the behavioral problems or mental health symptoms that can keep children and adolescents from leading happy, successful lives can be effectively treated with evidence-based therapies. With these treatments, psychologists and other mental health providers help parents and children learn how to work and live better with others, and to build the skills and habits that help them succeed in school and in life.

Common warning signs troubled youth may exhibit and signs to look out for include:

  1. Falling grades; truancy

  2. Extreme mood swings; volatile temper

  3. Persistent sadness, hopelessness, loss of interest

  4. Suicidal thoughts or actions

  5. Self-harm such as cutting of the skin

  6. Habitual tobacco, drug, and/or alcohol use

  7. Running away from home

  8. Sudden change in friends

  9. Secrecy, disobedience, rebellion

  10. Repeated lying to avoid consequences for misbehavior

  11. Finding humor in other people’s pain or distress

LGBTQ Associated Struggles and Symptoms

When seeking therapy, whether for issues associated with one's sexual, romantic, or gender identity or for everyday concerns, finding a qualified mental health professional who has experience and familiarity with issues that confront the LGBTQ community can be critical to successful therapy outcomes. LGBTQ affirmative therapy is a form of therapy for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and clients who are questioning their sexuality. It focuses on client comfort in working towards authenticity and self-acceptance regarding sexual orientation, and does not attempt to "change" them to heterosexuality, or to "eliminate or diminish" the individual. Couples/Marriage Counseling

Couples may seek marriage counseling for a variety of reasons. Some common reasons include: communication issues, infidelity, financial problems, lack of intimacy or connection, and problems related to parenting or in-laws. Marriage counseling can help couples address these issues and improve their relationship. Sensitivity toward our partners can stop us from bringing up concerns or issues in our relationships. While avoiding conflict is more comfortable and easier in the short term, it can lead to long term dysfunction. Being in a committed partnership can decrease the stress of life, if your relationship is stable and safe. Life brings many challenges and knowing how your partner prefers to be supported can drastically change their, and your, life experience.
